COMPOSERS OF THE MONTH - Jazz Appreciation Month 2017 - Women in Jazz
Saturday, April 1, 2017 by Claire Eldred | Composer of the Month
In the USA they share a fun month called JAM - Jazz Appreciation Month. Schools, colleges even government departments take part to raise awareness of Jazz and its historical roots and more modern influences. This year, being the centennial of jazz icon Ella Fitzgerald, JAM 2017 will celebrate women in jazz. Beyond the traditional female vocalist, there are also many great composers, arrangers, orchestrators, and instrumentalists who have and continue to leave an indelible print on the history and future of jazz.
So our featured musician is Ella Fitzgerald. See what you can find out about her; listen to a few of her melodies. Why did you think she was inspirational?
Here are some quotes about Jazz:
“If Music is a Place -- then Jazz is the City, Folk is the Wilderness, Rock is the Road, Classical is a Temple.”
― Vera Nazarian
“Amy [Winehouse] changed pop music forever, I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her. She lived jazz, she lived the blues.”
― Lady Gaga
“The piano ain't got no wrong notes.”
― Thelonious Monk
“There's something beautifully friendly and elevating about a bunch of guys playing music together. This wonderful little world that is unassailable. It's really teamwork, one guy supporting the others, and it's all for one purpose, and there's no flies in the ointment, for a while. And nobody conducting, it's all up to you. It's really jazz__that's the big secret. Rock and roll ain't nothing but jazz with a hard backbeat.”
― Keith Richards
